The Shock Factor
At Mutch Fitness, we don’t focus on the scale every day and I guide you to eat better, stay active, and create workouts for you that target your goals. Wake up, move, eat clean, repeat. That’s all.
“Please hide your scale, put it away, take it out for our next weigh in.” Work hard, the results inevitably come. There’s no way to fail if you are doing the work.
I don’t need to (or expect to) see the scale move every week. Sometimes it doesn’t, and there are factors that can make the scale screw with your mind more than it’s worth. What are your goals? How do you feel? What do you notice in your day to day routine?
Strength, stamina, speed, endurance, energy, mobility, flexibility, yes. Let’s talk the other stuff though. Mood, happiness, confidence, value, shock, disbelief.
It happens every time. There’s the day one jitters, where I’m talking clients off of a cliff, reassuring them they can do this, and creating balance and structure to their fitness routine with them. We climb the mountain of learning new things, feeling the post workout pain, working through injury or missed workouts, and we come out on the other side.
Then the 3-6 (or even longer depending on each person’s goals) week weigh in/photo taking/and measurements. We use weight as a measurement, but not as the entire factor to gauge success. If you’ve gained weight over the years, you definitely will lose some, but we must remember muscle mass vs. fat as well as body shape, your overall size, and what your goals are. We must remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint, and if we sprint we tend to find ourselves back in the same place because it is such a drastic change we have made in such a short period of time, that often isn’t sustainable with the output and eating habits.
With the longer lasting, over time approach the shock sets in time and time again. The focus is on your workouts, completing them, and moving to the next day. When the photos roll in, or we step on that scale, we are almost always shocked to see the changes we have made together, as a coach-client team with the commitment to programming and your hard work.
I’ve had clients shocked over 15 lb. weight loss, or no weight loss, but pants fitting that haven’t for years. I’ve had clients shocked over completely annihilating a physical fitness test geared towards someone 10 years younger than they are. I’ve had clients reshape their bodies, defying gravity and finally finding happiness in looking in the mirror. It’s all relative. What you want you can achieve; you just have to decide when that time begins for you.
When you’re ready for your shock factor, you know where to find me.
