Staying Fit During COVID? Me too.
There’s no need to go and squat outside your LA Fitness or similar to try and get fit. That was a joke, and honestly if you didn’t like it…well (insert shrug emoji here). Let’s be honest everyone, gyms are closed because of it being a true health hazard, but that doesn’t mean you need to lose traction with working out. It’s a new climate out there and everyone is adjusting – I will proudly say though, my Mutch Fitness clients have been killing the home workout game since before COVID.
It’s a different type of commitment for you Globo gym goers, group class fanatics, and multi-faceted equipment users, but it also may be a positive change for your body if you smash the same type of routine day in and day out when inside the gym.
How are you staying fit during COVID? Or aren’t you? Mental toughness is different when you are in a basement with a couple of resistance bands or a set of dumbbells that have collected dust, but you are glad you have now. Some of you may have a decent collection of gym equipment and some may have a fully equipped set up – if you do, then there are no excuses! If you don’t, I know it’ll take a bit more than just a slogan about ‘not losing the gains’ and just ‘sticking with it’.
So how are my wife and I, along with other Mutch Fitness clients doing it? Well I can tell you what works for many of us and maybe it can help you too.
Change your mindset. No, really, change it. You are in quarantine – or you are an essential worker, either way it’s tough for you right now. Make some moves, and start small if it seems daunting to you. What is your mindset now? Let’s try and keep the idea of ‘making moves’.
Make a playlist – podcasts, music, whatever. Get something that gets you feeling energized and use those playlists to gauge your time. Sounds silly, but for me working out with music gets me moving.
Create a schedule and do whatever you need to in order to get reminders. My clients get an email every day they have a workout to, but they also get access to their workouts a day or two ahead of time to get prepared, but not psyched out. If it is Monday, Wednesday, Friday, then what time? What’s your plan before and after – you need to make sure you stick to that too, so it becomes the pattern.
Tell yourself you’ll at least do one week, and you will no matter what – you have that in you for sure. It’s amazing how quickly you can find a routine that feels good for your mind and body – and you almost almost miss it when it’s gone.
My clients also get the joy of me popping up if a workout is missed in red when I check on their schedules – and if you really struggle with accountability, I use a tiered method in order to bug you a lot, but then taper off as you create your schedule and empower yourselves. I love watching clients take ownership especially during this tough time, and I hope you can find it too. You can always give me a shout if you’re ready for a program just for you, coached by me!
